Enrolling in Econ 204: Mathematical Tools for Economists

This mandatory course begins prior to the official start of the fall semester on Monday July 28th and ends on Tuesday August 19th. Although the exact times are not set, please know that you will be in class up to four hours a day, each day.

All new students are required to attend this course during the summer (unless given a waiver by Professor Anderson), but not all students actually enroll in Econ 204 during the summer. Students who are U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents should NOT register for Econ 204 in the summer. Instead, this will be a course that you register for in the fall, during your TeleBears appointment in early August, even though you will be taking the course in the summer. Non-U.S. Citizens or non-Permanent Residents, on the other hand, MUST register for Econ 204 in the summer. There are rather complicated reasons for this, but please know there is only one offering of Econ 204 (July 28th to August 19th), regardless of whether you register for it in the summer of fall.

The following only applies to non-U.S. Citizens or non-Permanent Residents

Those students who are not U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents will discover in your communications with the SISS office that normally the earliest you can enter the country is 30 days prior to the official start of the fall semester (August 27th). Newly admitted students to the department of economics, however, may secure an earlier arrival date so that you can get settled prior to the start of Econ 204. You can secure an earlier arrival date by officially registering for Econ 204 as a summer session course. Doing so will provide you with a visa entry date 30 days prior to the official start of Econ 204 (July 28th). This does not apply to every non-US Citizen or Permanent Resident, as some of you are already in the US and will not need to secure an early entry date (these international students may sign up for 204 in the fall). If you do need to secure an early entry date, however, then you must enroll in Econ 204 as a summer session course.

Important Note to International Student: Because of the strict policies overseeing the issuing of your visa, once international students apply for their I-20 or or DS-2019, they are ineligible for a waiver. If international students will apply for the waiver, they are encouraged to do so as soon as possible.
To facilitate your mandatory enrollment in the Econ 204 course, international students on an F-1 and J-1 visa will begin their program on 07/28/2008. The Berkeley International Office, which issues all F-1 and J-1 visa documents for UC Berkeley international students, will verify each international students full time enrollment in Econ 204 class on 07/28/2008. International students must be officially registered in the Econ 204 class through Summer Session E. Students who fail to register and complete the 3 unit Econ 204 class will be in violation of their immigration status and must leave the United States immediately. F-1 and 1-1 visa holders can enter the U.S. up to thirty days prior to the start of their program.
