We are currently investigating the connection of Windows Vista machines
to our network. At present it looks like you will need the Business, Ultimate,
or Enterprise edition to make network connections.
The use of personal laptops (at the owner's risk) is
permitted on the 100 Megabit wired network in some offices
and computer rooms. You must register using a form
available from
http://emlab.berkeley.edu/eml/emlforms/dhcp_app.pdf,
or from 687 Evans Hall. Details of the service will be
found in this PDF file. It is a requirement of this service
that your machine meets our
current security standards and the campus
Minimum Security Standards for Networked Devices.
Failure to comply will result in your access being removed.
You, and any other users of your room, are responsible for
the physical security of items in the room. You are also
responsible for any mis-use made of your computer.
The department has three AirBears wireless access points on
the 6th floor of Evans Hall serving the classrooms, lounge,
and section/tutorial rooms. Access point one is in 616, and serves 614,
616, 608-7 and adjacent section rooms, and the north end of 611 (Pexiotto
Room). Access point two serves 639. Access point three serves
608-8, 608-11, and most rooms up to 614 in the east core.
See http://airbears.berkeley.edu/
for details of this service. Other floors in Evans also
have wireless coverage, and the signal from locations outside the department
may be usable. Coverage is ever-expanding. A number of
businesses (cafes and restaurants) on Euclid are included.
In order to access the EML machines you will need to install an SSH client. The
campus licensed tool can be found at
Software Central. If you wish to run graphical Unix applications you will need the
Hummingbird Exceed package (from Software Central or the department's application libray)
and these instructions for
tunnelling Unix graphical connections via SSH.
Access to department printers and file storage
Off-Campus
network connections to Windows systems require the Cisco VPN Client from
Software Central to be installed
first. Note: this software may be blocked by local firewall rules.
These steps only need to be done once
You must be running Windows 2000, Windows XP
Professional or Windows XP Home. Earlier versions of
Windows are not suitable. If you are using Mac OS X Panther or Tiger,
see the instructions on the
CalNet Active directory Interoperability page.
Do not do this if your computer is a member of an
Active Directory environment for another institution.
The Berkeley settings will conflict with those of
your home institution.
You need an active network connection for this to
work. Department wired DHCP, AirBears (after you have
authenticated), and the Library LIPS service are all
suitable.
Establish a network connection. Commercial or other internet service requires the Cisco
VPN client to be installed and connected in order to proceed. Use the first connection option
for the Campus VPN, and sign in using your Student (CalNet) ID only. No '@BERKELEY.EDU' suffix
is used here. Usually the simple 'Campus' connection is fine. If you have trouble with
services via the Library proxy server, use the 'Campus (Full Tunnel)' connection. This does
send all your network traffic through campus, however.
Right-click 'My Network Places', and select
'Map a Network drive'. Enter:
\\econ182.berkeley.edu\HOME\12345678
where '12345678' is your CalnetID (Student
ID).
If you are using the campus licensed Symantec Firewall you may
have to enable NETBIOS name resolution to make this work. viz.
Symantec Client Firewall (SCF)
[From the SCF README file]
Installing the firewall on computers that access other resources using UNC
If you install the firewall on a computer that accesses other
resources using UNC (that is, \\server-name\shared-resource-pathname),
you will need to change the firewall Default NetBIOS Name rule setting
to Permit in order to access shared UNC resources from the computer.
You may also have to add the following entries to Firewall -> Configure
-> Networking -> Trusted kerberos.berkeley.edu
campus.berkeley.edu in order for the login to work. This does
not appear to be necessary with the Windows firewall or ZoneAlarm at this time.
Select the 'Connect using a different username'
link and enter your normal login and password i.e.
12345678@CAMPUS.BERKELEY.EDU.
If you choose the reconnect at login box your machine
will try to make this connection every time. This can be
inconvenient if you use your computer off-campus.
Click 'Finish'. This will give you the equivalent
of your 'T:' drive. The actual drive letter will
depend on what you select when you make the connection.
It will not map your Park Avenue / FRO desktop or My
Documents, but these are available as folders through the
network link.
Once you have your Home directory mounted, you can
connect to a department printer. In Start -> Run,
enter \\econ182.berkeley.edu . This will bring up a list
of shared drives and printers. Select the ParkAve
printer. You may be asked to permit this printer to be
installed. The printer is an HP 4100. We are currently running
the PCL (H-P printer language) driver.
This process can be slow if you are using a wireless connection.
Printer charges do apply.
The Acrobat Distiller printer driver is available through
the same method as above. You can access the Acrobat
software via the \\econ182\Acrobat share, and Stata via the
\\econ182\Stata share.
Applications mounted on the file server, such as Stata and the full
Acrobat, can be run from \\econ182.berkeley.edu\applications . Note that
not all applications listed here are available for general use. Local
host firewall settings may interfere, however people have successfully
run Acrobat Distiller and Stata from campus microcomputer laboratories
and over AirBears.
If you want to see the current Message of the Day for the Windows
system, it is in \\econ182.berkeley.edu\seenmotd\motd.txt . This is
normally displayed automatically following an update on department
computers.
If you encounter any problems with your use of Park Avenue,
send email to . Do not send
messages to the Econometrics Laboratory (i.e., do not send
messages to trouble, manager, consult, or postmaster as you
would if you encountered problems with one of the Suns).
